What does "Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints. Kill nothing but time" mean?

This quote was the motto of the Baltimore Grotto, a caving society and it is part of the "Leave No Trace" philosophy of naturalist all over the world. It basically means that when we are in a natural setting we should leave no trace of human intervention. We should, by all means, take pictures for our memories of our adventures. We should not leave anything behind such as trash, beer cans, paper, tobacco filters, plastic bags etc. We should be careful not to kill any of the wildlife in the area which includes animals, plants, and any living thing. We are stewards of this beautiful planet and we should not leave our imprint on any natural area. The motto itself could have come from the quotation,

"Take only memories, leave only footprints,"

This is perhaps the most important thing to observe while caving, urban exploring, or really anywhere in nature.

It is pretty self-explanatory, don't take anything, don't leave anything. At all. Don't steal. Don't litter.

Even a small rock that might seem insignificant, leave it there. If everyone took a rock, or an arrow head, even a mountain would be reduced to rubble.

Even a small mint wrapper that might seem insignificant, take it with you. If everyone left a mint wrapper, even a massive cave would be filled over-night.

There is however, one exception. Feel free to take as much trash with you when you leave. If everyone took out a backpack full of trash, even a garbage dump could be emptied out easily.

Also, keep in mind that sometimes even footprints can be damaging. Make sure to avoid fragile areas and be concious of where you step. (Thanks momomom)

It's really quite simple. These exotic sites need to last for generations to come. Don't ruin them because you're too lazy to carry your beer bottles out with you.

Mountaineering History

The History of Mountaineering goes way back to the time when no one had the technology and the skills to write about them yet. Because of that, we are left to surmise what the early Mountaineers did, the technology that they used, what motivated them to climb, or if they even thought of doing it. Therefore, this section will only focus on the recorded History of Mountaineering . We hope that they would give you some idea of how intrepid explorers dared to climb mountains, “because it is there,” if we were to borrow George Mallory's words when he was asked why he wanted to climb Mount Everest.

What is now one of the most revered sports was inspired by non-sporting purposes of early humans such as the building of altars for the Mountain spirits, erecting of watch towers for country sites, and making meteorological or geological observations.

Today, Mountaineering is a popular sport, hobby, even profession of walking, Hiking and mountain climbing on either rock (rock-craft) or snow (snow craft). It is frequently undertaken for the thrill of reaching the summit.

The achievements made in the sport are no mean feat. They require a lot of physical, mental and even logistical preparations if one aims for a successful climb. Aside from popularizing the sport, mountain expeditions also contributed to a lot of scientific studies. Below are some of the highlights in the Mountaineering world:

1874 - Grove, Gardiner, Walker, Sottajev and Knubel reached the summit of the highest mountain in Europe: Elbrus.
1913 - Karstens, Harper, Tatum and Stuck reached the summit of the highest mountain in North America: Mount McKinley also known as Mount Denali.
1953 - Norgay and Hillary reached the summit of the highest mountain in the world: Mount Everest in Nepal.
1985 - Dick Bass reached Mount Everest and became the first person to reach all of the Seven Summits. Please read Seven Summits for more information.
But not everyone was born for the rough terrain. Mountaineering, a practice handed down by the hunters and workmen of the ancient communities, requires high technical and gymnastic abilities. It is therefore important to be well-trained and climb mountains that are within your level of experience. The most expensive equipment can never compensate to your experience so make sure to build your experience up first before anything else.

Hiking, a more gentle component of Mountaineering, is walking on unspoiled mountain trails with the intention of exploring and enjoying nature. What used to be man’s mere familiarity with mountain treks in the spirit of the hunt is now a leisurely, even therapeutic activity.

The term “Hiking” is used by all English-speaking countries with variations in different regions. Australians, for instance, use the term “bushwalking” while the English simply call it “walking.” Overnight Hiking is specified as “backpacking” by the English while New Zealanders call it “tramping.”

Today, Mountaineering is already a multi-billion dollar industry which has spawned numerous websites, trails, and equipment are marketed to meet the lures of the sport. Aside from the monetary component, this activity is already popular and continues to become more popular among the younger generation who do it to appreciate and commune with nature more. They are the ones who will continue writing the History of Mountaineering until every mountain in the world has been climbed.

Real Love in Life

Here's what i learned and keep in my mind during the mass at edsa shrine last Feb 14, 2010, what does the love means to us,

Eros

Eros is probably what most people mean when they announce with a smile, "I'm in love." This type of love covers everything from queasy stomachs and warm fuzzy feelings to strong sensual passion.

There are a couple of very interesting characteristics about eros. First, in order to exist eros is dependent upon the situation and circumstances. As long as a couple is enjoying a romantic situation, eros can thrive. But, as soon as hurtful words or actions appear, eros simply evaporates.

Second, eros is also held captive to each person's perception.

Although eros at times might make us feel like we are on cloud nine, it can not provide a reliable basis for building a deep and meaningful relationship since it is so fickle and dependent upon perception and circumstances. Because of such things as accidents, diseases, and the fact that someone can choose to doubt or despise you regardless of your actions, it is clear that we can not determine how others will perceive us nor are we masters of our own circumstances

Philia

We recognize philia and its meaning from the name Philadelphia, that is, the city of brotherly love. This is the love of friendship, best friends, and the fellowship of being with those people you enjoy.

Although philia is wonderful, it too is not reliable since it is also held captive by the sifting sands of situation as well as by ours and other's perceptions and expectations. Unfortunately, we probably all know of a friendship which waned or was severed because of time, distance, harsh words, how someone interpreted another's actions, etc. When the New Testament commends love, philia is the not the word which is used.

The Beauty of Agape*

Unlike the previous two types of love, agape is not limited to being held hostage by its environment and someone's perception. The reason why agape can soar above these is because it is based upon the commitment of a decision. It entails the decision to proactively seek someone's well-being. Since it is not a knee jerk reaction nor just a responsive feeling to how I've been treated, agape is capable of acting in a hostile environment where there are no warm fuzzy feelings. For example, Jesus' teaching that we should agape our enemies is intended to show the boundless nature of the Christian commitment toward seeking another's well-being. Luke 6:35

The New Testament is full of examples and teachings illustrating the nature of agape as well as teaching designed to train the disciple's heart to be shaped by agape. A few examples illustrating the active nature of agape include:

• Knowing that sinful man would kill His Son, but also knowing that without Jesus we were doomed, God loved (agape) us by sending his Son. John 3:16
